It’s been a year since the original release of Duik Bassel (v16.0), and we’re very happy to release Duik Bassel.1 (v16.1), along with its brand new website, rainboxlab.org

Rainbox Laboratory

With the release of this new Duik, we’re also “splitting” Rainbox into two entities: Rainbox Productions is the cooperative dedicated to the production of animated films, and Rainbox Laboratory runs the software development. This comes with a new website, and we hope it’s going to make things clearer. It actually does not change much on the inside, we’re still providing services and co-producing animated films while developping and using our software, released under a free license. It’s just that we’re now a bit better for the organization of all this work!

What’s new in Duik?

We’ve improved your experience by tweaking the User Interface.
Duik now comes with optionnal stand-alone panels. This means each tab of Duik (rigging, animation, controllers, camera…) can now be in its own panel and docked separately into the user interface of After Effects.
In this new version, when you open Duik, you get to a “Welcome screen”, which greatly reduces the loading time. Duik is now up to five times faster to launch!

There are new tools in the constraints panel!
You can separate the dimensions of any property, including colors in RGB or HSL, which finally enables you to animate any color value, or saturation for example.
An auto-parent tool helps you parent the layers the same way you’d do in Maya or Blender: you just have to select a bunch of layers to parent all of them to the one selected last.
There’s a button in the Bones additionnal panel to (un)hide them all at once.

The Connector has been greatly improved.
You can now create and configure some effectors directly from the connector panel. This includes spatial effectors and the new texture map effector which controls any property with the color (hue, value, saturation, alpha…) of a layer.
An Expose transform tool measures and shows useful values from any layer: coordinates, angle formed between three layers, distances between layers, orientations… You can now easily connect a distance, an orientation, an angle, a location, to any other property.
You can also easily connect IK to any property too which makes it very easy to automate everything which has to happen when a limb bends (muscles, cloths, etc.).

Some useful shortcuts have been added to the Controllers panel, to very quickly parent layers to new controllers. The new Tag button enables you to use any custom layer as a controller and make it work with other Duik tools.

Other very useful tools have been added, for example to easily align layers, un and re-parent all children of a layer,remove a bunch of expressions (keeping the current value), copy and paste expressions… Along with some more advanced tools, especially for expression creators and developpers: you can get a lot of info from any property (index, matchName, average velocity, average value…), you can quickly “scriptify” expressions, etc.

The TVPaint importer has been updated too and works with all versions of TVPaint.

And these are just a selection of the best new features in Duik Bassel.1. There were dozens of bug fixes and other improvements.
